enjoy the show pk rock city is a good venu
Thanks Trev! You have a blast in Dublin too, ok! I've seen Arthur Lee and Mercury Rev at Rock City - I love the place - both the main venue and the Rescue Rooms. Amazingly ambiant and atmospheric rooms to play in. It will be nice to see and hear Brett in a more relaxed venue than the pressure cooker that is The Apollo, Manchester.
Nottingham will be my 10th, and probably final show I imagine. I am unsure what I will make of it, with Brett on lead vocals. But I remember saying that about Ian too. So I will travel down with an open mind as always. I've heard the clips from Ray's site via the MySpace links, and he sounds very good, great in fact. But different from Ian. Ian is someone I'll always miss though. It made me proud as a Northern Englishman to see him serve the memory and legacy of Jim Morrison with such talent, passion and dignity. That is what (IMHO) Brett must aim for. Not spectacular headlines or anything, but passion, grace and integrity to the philosophical and poetic message that The Doors espoused to the world between 1965-1971. It is funny, the thing that is most loyal to the music and message of The Doors, in this so-called 40th Anniversary year, isn't any of the offical 40th Celebratory corporate crap, but the much maligned yet much beloved work of Riders On The Storm. ROTS are what are getting the British press excited, not some re-releases and remasters of songs we've all have sold to us five times over on vinyl, tape, CD, DVD, 5.1 yada yada etc yada. There is a message in that too. True fans don't want gimmicks and polish. They want passion, committment and truth. And live performances, warts 'n all. That is what ROTS, and nothing else can support The Doors original message with. I hope this doesn't come off as too patronising towards Ray and Robby, but they give out a further message - that it is possible to grow old, and still be relevant and real to all generations. There are few musicians who play such charged and exilerating music as they do. If I am so in touch in my 60's, I will be proud and happy. I'm just 27 years old, but I feel a stronger connection to Ray and Robby as musicians than 99% of my generation's great musicians. They should be very very proud of what they are doing.
Cheers to Tom V. by the way for bringing the band back to Europe so quickly. It's a shame they're not doing Austria in August as I'm over there just a month over the Lovely Days festival. But Nottingham I'm looking forward to a great deal nonetheless.
Nough said from me!
