Interview with Ray

Nice find
they did 13 in Europe so hopefully they can do more than ten in the United States. Then again if they release the dates early enough I'll go anywhere to go see them, I just need time to plan ahead.

By the way, their final show ever should be in Los Angeles, imo

Some more tidbits:
Ray Manzarek: [laughs] Yeah, like KISS, or The Who… then we go in the studio in 2008. We have lyric contributions from Michael McClure, Michael C. Ford, Jim Carroll… I asked Warren Zevon to send me something, and he sent me two stanzas before he passed away: "River of madness/Running through L.A."

HG: Will Ian be contributing?

Ray Manzarek: He might. He’s a busy chap.

HG: Will you be performing "The Soft Parade" live?

Ray Manzarek: No.

HG: Any particular reason?

Ray Manzarek: It’s a bitch [laughs]. A lot of woodshedding to just sit down and learn it. Ian would have to learn it. It’s fatiguing. I’m getting lazy [laughs]. Robby will bring it up, and I’m saying "Oh, fuck…" "It’s easy, Ray. I’ll show you." It’s like Senior Wences; [affects Wences’ "Johnny" voice] "Easy for you, not easy for meeee." Robby’s mind is sharp. Has something to do with that IQ… 140… somewhere around there. My wife Dorothy has the same.

yeah, i caught wind about this possible tour a couple months back, and it is very very exciting to think about. la or new orleans, they both have deep doors connotations - la for obvious reasons, new orleans is interesting because yes, it was the last performance and so much of d21c has been about the end of the doors (ian first heard the doors on 'riders on the storm,' the current name, not playing the end, etc)...although i think la would, in the popular opinion, win hands down. riders is not about popular opinion, never has and still isnt. whatever the case will be, i think we all on some level realize this final chapter in the doors legacy is coming to a close, and i for one am hoping that we finally have a feast of friends while honoring these war-weary artists that have put so much into it and gotten their faces repeatedly pushed down into the mud, and like a phoenix rising from the ashes while giving ian the artistic perspective to continue to push on the cult's legend we celebrate them, the music, and the love.

True, but I think 3 of those were actually in '06, we shall see..

Doesn't Tom V manage Thin Lizzy? I think they did a similar tour like 25 years / 25 cities or something a while back..

As long as we're speculating:

Robby mentioned recently in an interview that he still thinks John might participate eventually.

Apparently John isn't too fond of Ian, and Ian seems to be getting more involved with The Cult.

Hmm.. probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I would love to see the 3 original Doors play together*, use The Doors name, maybe Ray can break out the old equipment (I think I read somewhere on the net that Robby was trying to talk Ray into it at some point). Not sure yet how involved John is with touring Tribaljazz. But then again, ahh, whatever.

Either way, I'm happy for what they've done, it'll be 5 years this September..

*nothing against Ty. He certainly is miles ahead of D21C's first drummer SC when it comes to playing Doors tunes.

Good point about 3 of them being in 06, but technically, the Roundhouse on NYE - I do believe they played that gig in both 2006 and 2007...

To be frank, I sincerely hope John isn't involved with touring plans with Ray and Robby. I like what they've built up with Riders, and I would be saddened to see it turned into a wake of some kind, a series of 'tribute evenings' or anything like that. If John's comes back to it all, I suspect the band's days of booking stadium sized arenas would be well and truly over. It would (IMO) turn into a series of nights similar to a VH1 Storytellers night, and the only way to get tickets would be a strong, deep and personal relationship with either The Doors or a significant shareholder of Ticketmaster... For the sake of my Amercian brothers-in-arms, I hope it stays as is, so as many of you as possible get to see it all, one more time.

Just the tone of this interview leads me to believe that a lot of what was said is off the cuff, not necessarily based on stone cold fact. Just my opinion - maybe a selfish wish that we get more than (10) dates in the US.

Off the cuff is interesting. Should be fun to watch what they do in the studio in 2008 as it says. They already recorded five or six songs with Ian in May 2005 and Ray does vocals on An American Express so it wouldn't be too difficult to get Ian back in the studio for a few tracks to wrap things up

I hope they don't forget about Canada--I'm hoping for a Toronto show.

BTW, didn't Ray recently say something to the effect that he would play as long as his fingers wanted to play?

Well, it'll be interesting to see if what Ray is quoted as saying is what actually happens..Maybe 40/40 could just be a rough framework idea for the tour, maybe they will make exceptions!

Even if this IS the last 'tour', I would hope that they can still play occasionally, why stop completely?

This was actually the interview I was talking about a LONG time ago concerning what the Riders plans might be. It just came out way later than I thought it would. Take from it what you will...

Ty and Ian are every bit the draw for me that Ray and Robby are.

OK. Not me, but that's cool; Ty and Ian are great, but as a Doors fan first, Ray and Robby are THE main attraction.

I guess my comments about wanting to see the 3 of them jam together were mainly inspired by the thoughts that Riders may be doing their last tour anyway (based on Ray's interview, Ian's previous comments about '07 being the logical conclusion, etc) and rather than Nothing, maybe they COULD go on eventually and do something with John..

However, that being said, my love for The Doors music goes waay past the D21C era or anything to do with it. I've ALWAYS wanted to see Ray, Robby and John play live together, for the last 20 years anyway, and if the 3 of them can sort out their differences long enough to perform together, I'd love to be in the audience.

I agree. I would LOVE to see the 3 original Doors and if they can mend fences, then we should be happy about that. We take things too personally. What happened to them, happened to them and we should pass judgement. It would be great if they can get along again and play together. I love TY, he's done a great job, but in the beginning, they said he was filling in for John and lets see what happens. Personally, I would really like to see this happen. JUst my opinion.
Either way....if this is their last tour, I must go. IT will be the end of an era and I"ll be very sad. but thankful I got to see them a few times!

I don't think Ty would have a problem with John returning, he has full respect of John Densmore and has stated that fact several times. He deserves more credit than he has been givin.

I recently had an email reply from Ty Dennis regarding a drum settings question I had sent him.

The email is very pleasant, he thanks me for supporting the band by seeing their show in Manchester and signs off with "See you next time" So read into that what you will.....to me it appears they are intending to carry on touring.

COol, I was just reading over this thread, and let's see.. as we all know John has since implied interest in possibly performing with Ray and Robby again and Ian has moved on.. if there's one thing I'm certain of, it's that the future's STILL uncertain, far out!

Seriously tho, I think they're all just going with the flow at this point, nothing really set in stone, and only time will tell.

Not aimed at you Jimbo, but someone from within ROTS management needs to get some announcement made, and soon. There are rumours, ticket websites selling tickets and no-one appears to know anything 'official.'

I sense messy lack of organisation on the ol' ticket front...

Oh well, that's half the fun of being a ROTS fan, I guess!!!

more like 400 cities, shit... riders ain't gonna do a 40 and quit. i still think they should do 'the end' - yeah, yeah, it was jims, well so was LMF - ray was quoted in his own book that jim said LMF was sacred to him, Riders plays it. could do it as an ironic statement, this ain't the end......
