OK. First of all, sorry for hogging this thread - it's just that I'm so psyched to hear of another tour in the offing that I can't resist!!!
I have one serious musical suggestion for the 2007 Tour. Not that I'm questioning Ray Manzarek's musical abilities in any way - he is in my opinion the greatest organist since Bach. That is the issue though for me - Ray is a greater organist than he is a keyboard player if you ask me. Yet he is constantly using an Alesis keyboard (which he has put to incredible musical use). But, and you know there is a but, Ray!!!, my favourite song by The Doors is probably When The Music's Over. This song has never benefited from the use of the Alesis from a organist's point of view. The sound just isn't deep enough. When The Music's Over stands as one of the greatest organ songs of the 20th Century, in fact of all time. It deserves to have a Vox Continental as it's organ component. Don't get me wrong, other songs sound fine with the Alesis; for instance, I love Love Me Two Times with the Alesis and I think you do a better job on this Ray, with the Alesis than you could ever manage with a Vox, Hammond etc. But When The Music's Over is the best song of the band's repoitaire and could be even better sounding with the Vox nailing it down. It also would present an opportunity to reintegrate a organ bass for this song. Phil Chen is absolutely the right man for ever other song on your setlists, but as I keep saying, When The Music's Over is unique, a stand-alone piece of music. I just believe that a Vox with an organ bass will raise it to new heights.
At the very least, it would keep your roadies busy with another piece or two of musical instrumentation. And I think it could also lend the song a little extra on-stage drama, with the king of musicians changing his instrumentation to blow people's minds with one of the ultimate pieces of rock opera that is When The Music's Over.
Whatever you choose to do Ray, I know you and your band (and they are your band: as Jim Morrison said: "You wanna know who The Doors are? Ray Manzarek, he is The Doors.") are gonna be doing one hell of a job next year, as always. It is amazing to hear that you're planning what will be your 7th year on the road with D21C/ROTS. This next year will equal the total time the original Doors spent as a band. It is an amazing accomplishment and if you manage to get the new album released as well, the touring and the album will present an incredible counterpoint to the original Doors history, where the band spent six seventh's of it's time being appreciated through their albums and unfortunately only one seventh of it's time on the road, whereas The Doors of the 21st Century will have spent one seventh of it's time being appreciated for the studio album and an amazing six seventh's of it's time being loved by thousands and thousands of people around the world watching the band play live and blowing all our minds.
Fondest Regards,
Daniel
