Would one know if this car still exists-or has it met its timely demise?
Webmaster
Doors fans/Mustang enthusiasts have been searching for the car for decades! Either nobody has found it, or they did find it and kept it under lock and key. I'm betting on the former. I think there is actually someone doing a documentary on the search for the car. I don't have the link handy, but I am pretty sure they have a yahoo group dedicated to this project.

Thanks for the picture the_manassa_mauler_1919-'26. Thats a really cool car, what type of car is that? Is it a Shelby Mustang 68 or 68 gt as mexicanshaman describes? I'm not good with cars, all I know is that I really want a 1970 Dodge Challenger or a similar American car.

kommander...

the car was either a '67 or '68 shelby gt 500 Mustang... all of the shelby mustangs were called gt's... they came in either a gt 350 or 500 model... morrison got his gt 500 in oct. '67 so it may have been a '68... not sure... regardless the car was basically the same in '67 and '68 ... today the '67 is more sought after b/c that was changeover year modeling wise... it was more powerful and more stylish then the '66.... & it also added the new gt 500 model as oppossed to only the 350....

carrol shelby was a renowned car racer and later designer... he first alligned w/ ford w/ a car called the ac cobra.... the shell bodies were from the british sports car company, ac... shelby in his calif factory placed ford engines in them as early as '62.... that car was produced thru '68 w/ the eventual 428 cobra jet engines in them... they were produced in very low #'s (much lower then the shelby mustangs) but could be purchased thru ford dealers... they were used mainly for sports car racing, though again, they could be actually bought at a dealer and used legally on the streets... they were extremely fast (0-60 in 4.2 seconds, top speed over 160) and very rare today... in good shape their worth a mint... below is a photo...

later in '65 carrol shelby further worked w/ ford for a more sportier, more expensive and refined version of the mustang... hence the '65 shelby gt 350 mustang... the car though not mass produced (under 10k), was a huge eye catching success reputation wise for ford...

in '67, the gt 500 was first introduced (the one jim had).... it had even a sharper new look... it featured a 1967 Mercury Cougar tail light panel minus the chrome trim, a flip-up spoiler, and two sets of air scoops on each side. This was also the first American car to feature a factory roll bar....

the new GT500 featured a 428 in³ (7 L) FE Police Interceptor big-block V8, as oppossed to the 289 in the gt 350... it may very well be the most sought after shelby mustang... a modified GT500 clone, known as "Eleanor", was featured alongside Nicholas Cage in the 2000 remake of Gone in Sixty Seconds, and a blue GT500 is prominently featured in the manga series Gunsmith Cats....

the '68 was virtually the same, except they were produced in mich.... the '69-'70 (last year) was more radically remodled w/ shelby having less say.... they were heavier cars....

the car is a legend... I'd be interested to know if jim chose the car or it was electra... I do know it was a gift from electra for the success of the first album, but I dont know if jim got to chose the car he wanted or if was the electra manag...

the reason I'd like to know this is... b/c who ever chose it, REALLY, REALLY knew their stuff.... shelby mustangs though obviously very cool (thats saying a lot, b/c this was the amer golden age of sports cars), were nevertheless not mainstream... it was an amer. elite sports car for the coneisseur of sports car... in other words, you really had to know your sports car in picking something so cool as this car... it would've been much more mainstream & kneejerk if you will to have bought the much more known corvette ( a beautiful powerful car in its own right, but much more mainstream) ... to put it in music terms it would be like being hip to the doors or velvet underground in late '66- early '67... you had have your ear to the ground in the car world to be in on this one... not to mention, having a healthy bank account...

I know Jim admired the best of American in arts culture etc... not to mention he was well read and shrewd w/ his choices... so its w/in the realm that he chose this car... yet on the other hand he wasnt into material possessions such as cars before... bottomline, whether he chose it (anyone know?) or someone keen did... they picked one of the top 3 most valuable sports cars collecter wise today, from that great amer. muscle car era of '63-'73... that car today is worth close to 100k if in sharp condition...

That's an interesting background - with all of the wacky memorabilia out there I'm surprised nobody has a "Vehicle Registration" or a cancelled title that would have a VIN on it. Then you could just log on to CarFax and, bada-bing, find out what's been going on with that car!

I mean, I'm sure it's as easy as that... biggrin.gif

I read years ago (probably 1997 or '98) in what appeared to be a very thorough Internet discussion forum that certain parties had definitive evidence that the car no longer existed (wrecked repeatedly, irreparably and finally junked anonymously). Hearsay, yes, but I remember this forum seemed to be very well documented. Who knows -- lost knowledge, perhaps....
