Full Version: New Songs With New Tour?

My question to everyone is what Doors songs would you like to hear ROTS play.

Jimbo
The most important thing is new songs. Cops Talk, An American Express, Eagle in the Whirpool, ect. There are lots of Doors songs they haven't done and should but I want to see them branch off a bit as a new band.
Webmaster
I really want to see them (at a minumum) add 'Eagle in the Whirpool' into every show. From what I've heard, the crowds have all loved it. The 'Ray fan' in me would love to hear ' An American Express' more, and possibly 'Tightrope Ride'. As far as new 'classic Doors' tunes, I really want to hear Riders do The Soft Parade.

Ray was awesome on An American Express in the one performance it was played (Oakdale 03)

we need to hear the soft parade live

I'd say that song is getting more and more likely to be heard. The band has been rehearsing it but now they just got to get Ray to take the time and learn his part tongue.gif
DazeDays
The End....

just a wish...
Chicago Zo
What about Close To You? Could that happen?
Chilean Lagarto
1-The End
2-Mystery Train
3-Gloria

I just read an interview with Robby in a recent GuitarLegends magazine and he said Ray has been "lazy" about re-learning the 'Soft Parade' but the other guys have already been working on it. Nice to know Ray is human too....but if they could even come close the the PBS version of that song....we will all be in for quite a treat....."we can whip the horses eyes and make them cry......."

And "Gloria" would just kick ass live

I have a feeling The Soft Parade may make its way into the setlist eventually

Waiting For The Sun. C'mon, I mean, how could they not? This song kicks ass! It deserves to be played.

I'd love to hear them resort back to the early days when Jim was absent from a set. Some long instrumentals ala Summertime and Latin BS#2 would be just the best.
Webmaster
Since their sets are a lot shorter than they were when D21C started out, I think they try to get in all the hits. By then, they have been playing over 2 hours! I personally would love to hear them play "Mystery Train", but odds are it would stretch into a 20 minute jam and take away a lot of other songs.

If you go back to the days of The Doors with Jim, in many cases they would do an early show at 7:00, then a late show at 10:00. If you look at the setlists, the early show would be a lot more "standard", playing a normal setlist and the hits. But the late show they usually threw in more of the non-standard stuff, did more jamming, etc.

That would be very cool to see Riders do two shows in a city (like Chicago smile.gif ) either on the same day or consecutive days. First show - the hits. Second show - whatever happens, long improv-filled sets of classics and also new songs. Advertise it that way so people know. Odds are the fans would go to both shows anyway.

Now THAT would be coolness in my book.

Filter in new songs in between the old songs, introduce the new material that way. I know that worked in 2003, the response was pretty good
Webmaster
From what I've been told, the response was great for Eagle in the Whirlpool. I actually had fans e-mail me asking what "Doors album" that song was from and where they could buy it. I got to hear Cops Talk a few times in the Summer of '03. That's the only one I heard live. I haven't got to hear An American Express or Eagle. I told that to Ray before the Congress Theater show and he was going to play it, but it didn't happen because Ian hadn't memorised the lyrics yet and they couldn't get a copy of the lyrics for him. sad.gif
I have my fingers crossed that they'll make Eagle a regular part of the setlist.
Dave
Jimbo
Me too since I've heard the same reaction about EITWP, I too haven't had the honor of hearing it. One article had Ray saying they'd play it at the Atlantic City show but that didn't happen.. I've heard Cops Talk and An American Express played live (Both at Oakdale 03). I loved Cops Talk and An American Express grew on me and I love now as well. I can't wait to hear more

jesus christ, Dave. those kind of scenarios are like wet dreams.

I always liked Universal Mind - the version from Absolutely Live. Jim was in great voice on that song. They also should do Hello I Love You - I believe this was the first song they recorded in the studio with Rick and the Ravens before Robby and John joined the band.

Dave that would be awesome. That would make a lot of people happy.

I've got another idea, like what Dave said witht the two shows.... What if they played a set or just a couple of songs with an orchestra or just additional instruments???

Metallica has done it, and so has Kiss just to name a few.

Just a thought

Would be perfect for most songs off The Soft Parade.

I want a full concert with Jim's voice in the background ( at least during L.A. Woman), and in cinemascope, 3D!
They could do a full tour like this, I'm sure it would work just as much. Something more visual like Pink Floyd used to do (since many of us never got to see that video screen on stage) but with Jim screaming all around the place. That's the magic that I miss, that madness. But they are still very good, I'd like to see a 10 min version of Not to touch the Earth, something big. You make me real could be a good one too. Mystery Train of course.

Due to the lawsuit and the result, that could never happen. I'm not sure I'd enjoy that as much as a live concert with a living singer though. I think a live band needs a vocal point. It's usually the lead singer; Someone you watch. Ian is all over the place during the shows and fits that perfect (in my book).

dave if they played 2 shows in chicago with both types of setlists, i would simply die from shock

And just so you guys know, I have no influence what-so-ever on what they do. I'm a fan just like you guys. I'm just thinking outloud about what I'd like to see.

yeah I forgot about that lawsuit....they could do that at least once, or when they will do their last last performance. I 'd like to hear Ray sing a bit more too. He's got a great voice. I like Ian too, but on the second concert I've seen, he was not the same guy, maybe just a bad night. Or maybe the concert was too short, he didn't have time enough to start the fire...

A perfect last song (when they do decide to hang it up) would be "The End", dedicated to Jim. Maybe Ray and Robby could share vocals that night with a blue spotlight on both of them.

As far as Ray singing more. He did sing "An American Express" in '03. I'd love to hear Ray do Tightrope Ride and maybe even throw in something like "The Golden Scarab" into the mix. I'd pay big bucks to hear "In Egypt.. on the Nile.. In Memphis.. Heliopolis.." live just once!

I agree Dave. The Golden Scarab mixed with Downbound Train if they don't want to play Mystery Train.

of course i remember. i remember being the 3rd to post on that thread and thinking, there's no way...then, 4 months later, at the congress theatre, shaking robby and ian's hand and thinking, again, there's no way...

hmmmm i wonder who started that thread biggrin.gif

Yeah, the two shows idea would be amazing! What a sweet tasty dessert for my mind to devour! I think the chances of that happening though, are bleak. If you consider Ray and Robby's age, most likely they'd be jumpin' in their pj's by the time the second show even started. A day after show seems like it would lose the energy that was created from the first show. It seems it would have to be done on the same night. I'm not saying in any way I would scoff at that option if it was presented. I'd be all for it.

I do think that they should throw The End into the mix on the final leg of their last tour. To kinda close out the book. It may be "Jim's Song" as has been quoted, but I can really think of no other way more fitting for them to not only pay homage to Jim but also fittingly close out their final performances - more or less truly saying "This is the end, my friend". My only wish is that they would perform it at multiple shows so more people could experience it - sort of a thank you to the fans of D21C/Riders.

The Golden Scarab would be a cool addition. I think they've given fans enough of an opportunity to hear "the hits" - now let's hear some of the more obscure songs.

hearing Ray doing Downbound Train live would be the shit smile.gif
PK The First
I think they've gotta go for a combination of the huge megalithic numbers they have - like The Soft Parade - oh god I'd love to hear that live. They would deserve an MTV Music Award just for pulling off the logistics of it with a full orchestra! And maybe Ray could have an old fashioned VOX Continental whipped out for it!

I'd love (in my wildest dreams!) to see a setlist that read:

1. Light My Fire (10 Minutes)
2. When The Music's Over (15 Minutes)
3. Not To Touch The Earth and the full-blown Celebration of the Lizard (30 Minutes)
4. The Soft Parade (15 Minutes)
5. Queen Of The Highway/The Spy/Indian Summer (10 Minutes)
6. LA Woman (12 Minutes)
7. Riders On The Storm (45 Minutes - with a large Ray solo - like he did at the La Scene Club in Paris on December 8th 2003 - what a performance by a keyboard master - that gig convinced me that Ray is the greatest organist since Johann Sebastian Bach - I'm not joking ohmy.gif )
8. The End (20 Minutes)

That would give a concert time of: 157 Minutes!!! Not counting time between songs - Ray entertaining us all with his great stories, Robby being his usual gobby noisy self on the microphone(!!!) - he never knows when to stop! Ha ha! Ian - king of cool - telling it like a lost English hitchhiker on Route 66 having found enlightenment on the side road of the doors ala Jack Kerouac - from Warrington to West Coast LA!) and Ty Dennis beatin' on along with the great talent he's developed for this music and Phil Chen's twanging raw bass enthusiasm.

Oh god, I think I just described my first night in musical paradise. And that's just 8 songs out of The Doors catalogue of over 50! huh.gif blink.gif ohmy.gif

My other ideal world gig scenario would be arriving at 5pm for a show and seeing the band play every single song from Break On Through To The Other Side to Riders On The Storm (as well as Other Voices, Full Circle and the new stuff I haven't heard yet like American Express and Eagle In The Whirlpool - god that title sounds so cool - christ knows how good the song is - get it released NOW! Before it gets pirated or something!)

Anyway, I'll see what Santa brings this Christmas (please please please a list of Doors, sorry ROTS gigs in the UK!!! Please Santa - I'm beggin ya, I'll do anything. But not that! laugh.gif )

I hope these beloved friends of ours play until they're 202 years old! I figure I've travelled now in total about 7,500 miles (including return flights!) in order to watch this band play on 7 nights. Put them together into one week, and I don't think any human being would have enjoyed himself as much as I have. When you throw in meeting Ray, Robby, Ian, Ty and Phil after the Paris and Manchester shows, my god, thank you guys, you have no idea how much fun and happiness you've added to my life and that of countless others smile.gif Thank you so very very much.

universalmind1123
personally, i think it would be great for the guys to slow things down like they do during 'people are strange' and 'crystal ships' with songs like 'love street' and 'wishful sinful.' i know ian can sing those kinds of songs, as shown in cult stuff like 'bleeding heart grafitti' and 'edie (ciao baby)'.
Jimbo
When D21C did Love Street in 2002 it sounded very beautiful
KORE
I would love to hear Spanish Caravan. Robbie you make me melt when you play it. The last time you played in Tampa, I told you backstage that I couldn't wait to hear you play it and you broke my heart when you told me it wasn't on the set list sad.gif Bring it back.

And the perfecting ending would be John walking out & playing the drums for The End. Then they could all stand side by side, do one big bow, and the lights would go out. It would be perfect---they'd put their differences aside & everything would have come "Full Circle".

I guess a guy can dream...

Id say its more likely Jim will be with them again before John is
universalmind1123
man, i think if john, robby, and ray played the end with a giant picture of jim being projected in the background, with his vocals playing on the sound system, and then they simply got up and took a bow...and never played in public together again, it would be simply put, heaven.

of course, this scenario wouldnt happen for at least 2 years, cuz i dont know about everyone else, but i havent had my fill of ROTS yet
Chicago Zo
If they did the whole playing The End with John, they could only do it once. The very last show. It would have to be at a place were a larger crowd than normal could see it, I don't know where that would be though..... Any thoughts?

I'd love to hear:

1. The Soft Parade
2. Close to You (Ray on Vocals)
3. Shaman's Blues (One of my Favs)
4. Classical Gas

--I think that Robbie would jam this tune out and Ray could really add a new twist to it with some screaming organ!!
