Full Version: Eloquent Piano Piece Ode For Jim Morrison

While seeing Ray in person, without any backup band, a one man show, as it were, a tour de force, Ray's musical memorial to Jim was one of the saddest yet lovliest pieces and experiences. A thoroughly haunting piece of music, and I have said this before, and it bears repeating:

Anyone who heard this would be hard put not to see, how Ray and his talents shine through in the quietude, when they are least expected as much as anytime anyone who takes pride in their talent, shines through the trevails and vissicitudes of life.

Is this the same tribute to Jim that Ray would do while touring with Michael McClure?

No, this was one that he did when he performed in the SPIRIT of 67 show at Harrah's Marina with the remains of Jefferson Starship, BBHC and Quicksilver Messenger Service. I don't recall anysuch thing with Mike McClure, but on the whole, the entire evening was devoted to Jim's poetry, so I might not have been quite as aware of this then.

What I am referring to is a fusion piece with sounds emanating from rock to classical to jazz all interwoven, back and forth up and down, stacatto, vibratto, in a wave of mixes of sounds that encompassed the complexities of his deceased bandmate.

are there any audio from Ray & Mclure sessions? footage?
Webmaster
There is audio and video of Manzarek/McClure.

On the 1993 release Manzarek/McClure CD and VHS release 'Love Lion'. The track is called "In Memoriam: For Jim Morrison". Ray improvises on 'Riders On The Storm' on the piano while McClure reads his ode to Jim.

Here's all the info on "Love Lion" in Ray's Discography: Click Here

They do the same piece on the CD release "There's a Word", this time also accompanied by Larry Kassin on flute.

The piano part of "Love Lion" is great! rolleyes.gif

Ray Manzarek, together with some other great artists (Iron Butterfly e.g.) of the late 60ies was announced to bring us "Summer of Love" near my hometown in 2001, but the concert was cancelled. What a pity it was. sad.gif

Sounds like an awesome summer! Duane Allman met his untimely demise in 1971, so looks like you caught them just in time!
