For those of us who are huge Cult fans as well as huge Doors fans, Riders On The Storm is a godsend. For me, I got into The Doors and The Cult at about the same time, when I was 16-17 back in '86-'87. The Doors are far and away my favorite band, but The Cult is right in there at No. 2. If you would have asked me in the late '80s who should sing for a reformed Doors, I would have said "Ian Astbury" -- "and that's no lie"!
So for us Doors/Cult fans, it begs the question: Should Riders play some Cult songs? I'll be the first to say that more than anything, when I see Riders (and I have twice now), I'm there to hear those legends Ray and Robby play Doors tunes -- to see live what I never could have before. But hey, a couple of Cult songs would be awesome!
If they did play Cult songs, what tunes should they play?
I have a few votes:
"Wolf Child's Blues": Die-hard Cult fans who have the "Rare Cult" box set might know this tune. It was the B-side to the "Love Removal Machine" single. I was listening to this track the other day and thought, "This is just the kind of bluesy jam The Doors used to do live."
"The River": Another from "Rare Cult," the B-side of "Sweet Soul Sister." Hypnotic, mysterious. The liner notes from the box set even refer to the "Doors-y keyboards."
"Joy": From the album "The Cult." The keyboards in this one are very Manzarek. I'm listening to the song now, and I can almost see Ray playing!
So what do you think? Post your votes! Maybe on the next tour, the guys will slip in a surprise for us!

P.S. Sorry if this is an old, tired thread topic that I missed!

I would like to see that, I love Joy and of course its a perfect song for Ray. I dont think they ever will, I'm pretty sure its been brought up in interviews and the band isn't all that interested. Maybe they could use some cult material for improv

i've thought 'the river' and 'joy' would be great additions to the mythtical album; overall though, i would prefer ROTS to stay away from cult stuff - without duffy, the songs would suffer, despite robby's genius

If it is a consensus, within the band, then they should do it. Billy is an awesome guittar player, but I don't think that Robby would have troubles in playing the parts, besides, the tracks would certainly have a "Door" twist to them. When Audioslave put the first album out, they were not playing songs from Rage or Soundgarden, but the seeing the all the fans were continously asking to hear them, the band decided to do it , and now it is a part of the setlists.
With an album of new material coming out, it is my oppinion that it would be amazing (from a fan point of view) to see them play the new ones , the old ones, and some throw ins of Cult, Ray solo and Robby solo, as surprises in the set list, it is all about the entertainment, in the end.
"Joy" from the Cult self-titled album would be a perfect song to receive Ray's lecture and Robby's take, and I bet that Ty and Phil could do an awesome job with their parts as well.

Hi,
I'm a big fan of both the Doors and the Cult. It would be interesting if they performed some Cult material, but from a new, different perspective.. with extensive keyboard solos for one.. and the stylings of Robbie Krieger of course would introduce a very different slant to the Duffy stuff..

I'm not a big fan of the Cult - but there is no reason why they should not do it ..if that is the direction that the band wants. "Painted on my Heart" was a good tune and of course their hits. I'm not very familiar with their B sides @ all.
I'm into the ROTS for the DOORS material ~ I feel that should stay with the DOORS material as that is what people expect to hear. The impression I have - it is the 2 DOORS members and Ian standing in for Jim.. not the 2 DOORS standing in for the Cult players...

I think that ROTS can play any tune they want and most of us would enjoy it. Some of us just like to see that Ray and Robby are still in action. Ian is welcome addition and so our the songs of The Cult. I would like to see them play "Sun King" live, that would be cool.

I like the idea, The River would be a good choice, maybe they could remake it into a more doorish tune. But if we're going that way, how about having Ian write ONE Riders song ? I'm sure after his trip to India he is absolutely loaded.
COME ON IAN LET IT ALL OUT !!!

I know you Lady, we shared a night and a day togehter, I never found out if you met Ian, I hope that you did for he means so much to you. That is a good thought and not a kick. You are a solid woman and I would camp in separate tents any time with you. do you remember the Humming bird?
Coffee was pretty good eh?

Hi all i'm new to the board but not new to Riders/D21C..
missed them in june when they came to NH

but saw them in Boston MA about 2-3 years ago (yikes it's been a while )
amazing show !
None the less i found this topic interesting

i have always thought it would be cool
for the band to intergrate Peacefrog and PeaceDog

..
also i think the River has some amazing Dooresque mood to it and would be great to hear them play..
but i agree with another taht without duffy it might sound odd, even though Robby is a true guitar
God

.. but if it were to happen i wouldn't complain

.
stay well

actually, i wish i had the skills to do mash-ups. this would be a great follow up to the "sanctuary's over" mix linked on ida's site. i'm sure the music could eventually flow together; there is a demo of 'peace dog' on the 'rare cult' box set where ian sings the words faster - maybe they could fit into the music of 'frog.' eh, just a cool idea...

Maybe Ian could introduce one of his solo song...
BTW, Painted on my heart is not exactly a Cult song.

ian should do 'high time amplifier' or 'metaphysical pistol'...
and yeah, 'painted on my heart' was written by the same chick who wrote 'i dont wanna miss a thing' for the 'armaggedon' soundtrack. it was originally intended to be done by aerosmith for 'gone in...' but nic cage is a huge cult fan, so they got billy and ian back to do it...

That explains everything. If NicK's arm is long enough to have Aerosmith replaced with The Cult, can't he just kick Atlantic's ass for screwing my dearests?
Seriously, I do not consider painted on my heart as a Cult song. I sometimes get the feeling Ian is a bit ashamed of it or he wants to leave it behind at the least.
About the solo songs...I meant the new ones !!! But I've never heard the old ones live. You give me an idea...

Well, I wouldn't mind if Riders played some Cult tunes.....but from what I understand from over on the Cult forum.....Ian might not want to....people have claimed that Ian said that the Cult stuff is the past and Riders is the future. I didn't hear him say this but some Cult/Riders fans on the Cult forum have eluded to this....so I don't know.
I must admit, that I didn't know who "The Cult" was before Ian became the voice of Riders....well, I first saw Ian on VH1 "Storytellers" but thought that he was from "The Blue Oyster Cult" never knew about "The
Cult" (Might have something to do about me being on the road with a band from my neck of the woods called "Dirty Looks" they got signed by Atlantic Records and I merchandized/kept them in line on the road...so I missed much in the 80's). Once I saw Ian preform with The DC21 I immediately was taken by him and everything "Cult/Ian" I could get my hands on I did...so NOW I play "The Cult" just as much as I play "The Doors" and not much else.....I'm a big Ian fan......Ian is right next to Jim Morrison for me!
So with ALL that said I would have NO objections what-so ever at any Cult music being played....hell, I know and love "The Cult" music just as well as I know "The Doors"! Absoutely, Love BOTH!!! Both takes you...welll you alll know where!

ah, the mythical "new" ian solo songs...it's been, what, a year since 'warriors of the mystic plains' was sposed to be out?
i asked him about it at the chicago show; he said "i've got about 20 songs ready, but i'm looking for a guitarist. dont worry, its coming"
i'm not sure he performed a lot of the old solo stuff live at all...he didnt tour alone, right? just with holy barbarians?
