I had the pleasure of seeing both Angelo Barbera and Phil Chen. They both brought something different to the show, I'll say that! Watching Angelo in 2003 in New Jersey and New York, he stuck a lot closer to the original bass sound of The Doors, whereas Chen has a much stronger 'plucking' style (apologies - I'm no bass expert; like Ray, I only play bass with an organ - but nowhere near as well!). Phil has a stronger tendency towards going off and interpreting. I used to prefer Angelo's style, but having heard Phil several times over here in Europe, I can't seperate 'em any more. As the band gained distance from the original Doors sound (always close, but all sound evolves I suppose), I learned a real respect for Phil. In addition, he's a very nice guy, as I'm sure Angelo is too.
But I like to brag about probably being one of only a few hundred people maybe who ever saw the band with Ian, Brett, Angelo and Phil! Only ones missing from my stamp collection now are John and Jim, sadly. Still an outside bet on seeing John at some point, but Jim, well, I'll have to settle for him humming quietly in my ear when I have the inevitable conversation with the man at St. Peter's gates...
