I read in Time Magazine that Einstein said that people are not the free, existential creatures that they believe themselves to be. People obey the gravitation of the constellations that orbit through their minds. He also said that mystery is the most beautiful emotion that humans can experience. I think that JIm's attraction was that he offered people a glimpse at mystery. That most beautiful of emotions attracted fans to Jim. He condemned some of his audiences with the exclaimation that "all of you are slaves!" Jim realized that humans are puppets dancing to the music of a hurdy gurdy. At times this music plays the deadly tune of war. It played that tune for Viet Nam and now it plays for Mesopotamia. Some of us are born to sweet delight; some of us are born to the endless night.
