For those who don’t want a really detailed review, you don’t need to read the final paragraphs. I don’t recommend it though. So here’s the overview for people who DON’T have too much time on their hands.

1. VH1 ranks the Doors as the 32nd greatest artists of hard rock. Ahead of bands like Rage Against the Machine and Alice in Chains and behind bands like Cheap Trick (really?) and Motorhead (? more really). I never really think of the Doors as hard rock necessarily, at least when you listen to the albums, but live, they definitely are. I’ve seen some bands that rock pretty hard (Wolfmother, Black Keys, Motley Crue, Aerosmith) and Riders on the Storm are right there with them. An almost corny, psychedelic song like Strange Days turns into a ear bursting, barn burner, in the club.

2. Brett is great. He’s attractive (good thing he’s married or I might be single)(you have to be hot to sing Back Door Man). He’s a powerful singer. Most importantly his stage presence is very good. He dances and moves well. He’s intimidating at times and soulful at others. I love Ian and his voice and his voice does suit some songs better, but Brett is outstanding.

3. The crowd was perfect. They were unyielding in their energy. They were knowledgeable and supportive and singing. They were dancing and moving but not causing problems. They smoked weed at Brett’s request (and not) and it was just great to be a part of such a perfect group of people. There must have been ten songs where the crowd cheered like it was the end of the concert. I gave Pepper’s crowd an 11 back in the day and this crowd a 10. Pepper had girls flashing them. That’s the discrepancy.

4. To see your favorite song, a longtime fan favorite, a bar and cover favorite and have an influence (maybe) on it’s being played, is an unparalleled feeling.

Here’s the real review:
* All quotes are very close to accurate although they may not be exact quotes.

Jen and I left the girls at the Rainforest Café to get drunk. They succeeded. We went and stood in line with other Doors enthusiasts, my people, and listened to a very talented blues musician play out on the walk.

After we got in I was so excited and nervous I couldn’t just sit but I didn’t want to stand and get tired. Fast forward. Monster in the Machine wasn’t very good at all. They were like Creed and Nirvana combined except playing love songs for a soundtrack to a bad teenage heartbreak movie. That is except they played parts of Edie (Ciao Baby) the ballad off of the Cult album Sonic Temple which was kind of ironic (Ian Astbury, composer, and former singer for Riders on the Storm). Anyways they finally stopped playing and we had a short wait before the lights went out and the best concert intro ever (Carl Orff’s O Fortuna) came on.

Robbie and ROTS started off with a crunchy version of Love Me Two Times followed by Break On Through, which, no matter how many times I hear it or how many versions I hear, never gets old. Ray also incorporated the Dead Cats, Dead Rats narrative and added in some well-deserved shots at Bush and Cheney (“In a top hat.”) After Strange Days, my least favorite song of the set, Brett told of his new boy (congrats) and how he had waited for the son which led into Waiting for the Sun, an incredibly underrated tune. The crowd favorite When the Music’s Over was next and Brett did an amazing job to say nothing of the musicianship of the others. Peace Frog was funky and led right into Blue Sunday.

And then I got to see The Soft Parade. By far the Doors most underrated songs and one of their absolute bests. It takes the listener on so many journeys with so many feelings. It’s the one song (other than The End) that I never thought I’d see live. Ray took a shot of tequila before Brett got the crowd going with Alabama Song. Back Door Man was next and Brett (more on him later) really earned his keep by keeping it sexual (“I eat more pussy any man ever seen!”) and energetic. Five to One followed with the fun car to the graveyard interlude “Gonna take the biggest bottle of Jack Daniels you’ve ever seen. And light up a huge joint and get really…FUCKED UP!” or something along those lines. Touch Me with the entertaining Sex Machine tribute/intro was next followed by LA Woman one of my absolute favorites in large part because of the testament to Jim. “I want you to sing it for me loud and clear…actually I don’t want you to sing it for me, I want you to sing it for the Mojo Man himself…Mr. Jim Morrison.”

They closed with this and left for a short while before the crowd urged them back out to the thunder and rain of Riders on the Storm which is maybe when I feel most peaceful and connected at a concert. And then one of the most magical things ever happened. A gentleman next to me (before the encore) had predicted Roadhouse Blues and Light My Fire as the encore. ROTS rarely plays Roadhouse as an encore so I dismissed it. Yet after Riders we screamed, “Roadhouse, Roadhouse, Roadhouse.” Brett went around to each band member and whispered then came back to the mike and said, “I think there’s a song you guys want to hear..So we’re gonna have a little change to the setlist.” And Robbie started playing my favorite song, Roadhouse Blues. A classic bar song and the second of two shows that I've been to where they’ve played it as part of the encore. I couldn’t have been more excited. Everyone was singing the beer lines and you could tell Brett really enjoyed it.

Light My Fire was last (after a false start) and it’s obviously a huge crowd favorite. I love Robbie’s Elanor Rigby snippet that really keeps the crowd extra-interested in the solo. There was no energy let down and everyone, Ray especially, was really appreciative of the crowd.

Ray always talking about making love and peace and I couldn’t agree more. As long as they keep playing that well and with that passion I’ll go see them any time I can, and based upon the people who were there, there are a lot of people who agree with me.

The Soft Parade was great. I love Brett's presence and they play it so accurately (it's got to be very difficult). I forget how rollicking it gets. Brett's great though.

By the way if anyone is interested in other reviews I've written (not saying you should be by any means, but I do make references to other concerts and other reviews somewhat often) or if you're interested in any future concert reviews (The Cult in Phoenix in October!), you can check out my blog under myspace.com/lizzzzardking. I try to go to as many concerts as possible and just get my thoughts down for my own sake mostly but also so people can see what bands are like live from just a normal fan's perspective. I'm really bias towards the Doors/ROTS though.

Hey, great review. We just saw 'em for the first time in Atlanta & can hardly wait to see them again. If we had done our research earlier would've tried to be there for the Anaheim show as well. Thanks, 68C
